Hans Joachim Keil was born 20 April 1864 in Dessau, Dessau, Sachsem-Anhalt, Germany to Christian Gottlob Keil and Sophia Friederike Adelgunde Hahn. He married Johanna Wilhelmina Elise Henze, daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Henze and Henriette Caroline Christiane Auguste Fischer born 13 July 1870 in Rothehuette, Sachen-Anhalt, Germany. They married in 1893 in Germany. While living in Samoa, they adopted a little boy, Peter born 1891 and died in 1910. Johanna died 4 May 1908 in Vaivase, Upolu, Samoa. Hans married a second time to Daisy Ahmu , daughter of Ah Mu and Tala'esea Le'iataua Lesa born 1 April 1892 in Pesega, Faleata, Upolu, Samoa, on 16 January 1909 in Western Samoa. They were the parents of nine children.
